  • "A lovely property, full of the character one would expect from an old stone built cottage."

It has all the mod-cons expected for modern living. The garden is lovely with comfortable chairs for outside socialising. Beer is a lovely village with good links to surrounding towns. The cottage is handily located with beach, pubs, shops and coast path within easy walking distance. The free parking space is a short distance away and is located at the back of the Barrel O’beer pub. It is secure with a lockable gated entrance. Busses (quite regular) stop over the road by the village store. There are lots of other benefits to this property, too many to mention! Most have been covered by previous reviewers. I would certainly like to return here soon.

Thanks for your lovely feedback George. We would love to host you again should you ever consider returning to Beer. Property Owner

  • "Lovely cottage situated in a fabulous place in Beer."

It’s quite noisy early in the morning as it’s where the bus stop is situated and they’re turning up quite early. Loved the cottage but this was the only cottage that I’ve been to for many many years that didn’t leave a little extra for you. Cottages in the past have left some milk, bottle of wine and some goodies. Even though this definitely didn’t spoil anything at all, I was surprised that there was nothing as those little extras mean so much. There isn’t a visitors book to write in either. All in all, we had a fabulous time and would certainly book the cottage again. Thank you

  • "We absolutely loved your cottage."

Mainly because it felt like a real home, with beautiful artwork and ornaments and some amusing touches ( e.g postcards) . Also lots of DVD s and books. Only one problem. We are four ' older' ladies and the one who had the single room found the bed restricting and uncomfortable. Maybe more suitable for a child? Other than that it was great and so convenient for buses and shop. Local walks were not ideal for two of the party with limited mobility, but actual village beautiful and unspoilt.

Thank you for your lovely feedback. We have tried to make the cottage as homely as we can for our guests, so it's lovely to know you enjoyed staying there. We appreciate your thoughts about the single bed, we can add a note to the property description for future bookings. Property Owner

  • "We were very disappointed with the cleanliness of this cottage."

The fridge smells dreadful and in need of a thorough cleaning. I put a bowl of bicarbonate of soda inside and that made it bearable to open the door. Microwave, kettle and oven were all grubby. The cutlery trays also. Paintwork needs refreshing and skirting boards and radiators very dusty. When I stripped the bed at the end of our stay the mattress cover was grubby and there was a tear in an obviously old mattress, the quilt also had a coffee or tea stain on it. The living room carpet needs a good shampoo. Such a shame as the cottage is in a perfect location at the top of the village opposite the local shop. Also would be very comfortable for a family with lots of toys, games and books for a rainy day.

Thank you for your interesting feedback. It’s almost as though you had stayed somewhere else as we had a thorough spring clean two weeks before you stayed. The guests the previous week to you were relatives so we asked them for their thoughts. They said the cottage was clean and they confirm the fridge was fresh as they cleaned it before they left. Sadly, your experience was different. We want you to enjoy your holiday in the cottage and it’s a shame you didn’t. You remember that we ask guests to tell us if there is anything they are not happy with, that way we can try and immediately resolve issues so they can enjoy their holiday and time in our house, rather than be unhappy and then leave negative comments later. Had you let us know at the time we would have asked our caretaker to call and look at the things you were not happy with. Property Owner

  • "From the original contact with questions on the cottage with Sykes to the contact with the owners for the access, I have nothing but praise for this little gem of a property and the booking process."

The cottage was just as described and had everything you could possibly want and more. It was truly home from home, not the usual 'sterile' holiday let with only the bare basics to survive, there was an abundance of extras, books, DVDs, children's books, games. Plenty of glasses, crockery, children's bowls/plates, chairs outside, picnic bags, blankets etc etc etc. There are two huge bedrooms, with another really good size double and a cute single, (which was nabbed straight away by my grand daughter, with a huge teddy bear that she didn't want to leave behind !) With it being in the middle of the village, yes there was a little noise from the bus stop, but nothing major, but if you want a central position then there will be some traffic noise, but it's not a busy village with through traffic. It is truly a lovely traditional seaside village, with 3 pubs that offer good food, tea room/cafe, cocktail bar, fish and chip shop and a lovely restaurant, which also offers its full menu as a takeaway option if you cannot get booked, add to that the cafes on the beach and you will be well catered for. I would don't hesitate to come again, and hope to revisit in the future Thank you Craft Cottage for a lovely week with my family

  • "This is a charming cottage with many interesting artefacts."

It's location in central Beer is excellent. We are early risers and were untroubled by local traffic noises. The cottage is nicely maintained and well equipped although some soft furnishings and decoration, in particular on the ground floor, are looking jaded and in need of refreshing. As a party of 6 adults we found the lack of a toilet on the top floor of the building to be something of a challenge. The availability of a pleasant garden with useful seating was an asset. The 18 month old, with whom we were holidaying, loved the collection of children's books and toys. I recommend the addition of some basic cleaning equipment, a fully functioning vacuum cleaner and modern dustpan and brush, to allow visitor to keep the cottage tidy during their stay.

"Thank you for your feedback. We appreciate guests giving us their experiences of our lovely cottage and try and take onboard our guests comments where possible. Each year we replace some furniture and fittings and/or part decorate to keep it looking fresh. Unfortunately some things are practically not possible; adding a third toilet on the top floor is one of them, fortunately there are two other toilets in the house. Regarding your suggestion of adding some basic cleaning equipment, we do encourage guests to contact us if they cannot find anything as we could have explained that the cleaning equipment, a fully functioning Henry vacuum cleaner and a modern dustpan were all in the kitchen cupboard." • "We had a lovely holiday in Beer."

Craft Cottage is in the village itself so it is an easy walk to the local shops, pubs, restaurants and beach. When we looked at the parking in the details before our holiday we thought it might be a bit of a pain having to walk down the road and unlock the gate every time, but it was easy to do and caused no problems. It was out of season, therefore the shops/restaurants were open for shorter hours or less days, but we didn't find this to be a problem. Because it was out of season, it was lovely and quiet. Everyone parks outside Craft cottage to visit the Village Store, which would be more annoying in high season as it would be busier. It is quite noisy outside in the mornings with deliveries to the shop and the school buses reversing into the bus stop. The cottage is very comfortable and had everything we needed. We weren't able to get the gas fire to light while we were there which was a little bit disappointing. There is central heating also which we were thankful for. We have a small dog who isn't able to walk very far. This meant that to reach any level grass for him to use for toileting, we had to go up to the cliff top car park. However, there are lovely views from up on the cliff so although it was a bit of a palaver, it was worth it! We would definitely visit again.

We love cooking and ate in each evening (well, we sat outside to eat) although petite, the kitchen has everything you need. The only niggle was that there is no parking at the Cottage - the allocated space is down the road a little way, through a very narrow road, and visitors had to use the public car park (also quite near, but in the height of summer, sometimes full!) The Cottage is extremely thoughtfully resourced - the best collection of books and dvds we’ve seen! The outside furniture is very comfortable (blankets even provided so you can sit out all evening, when it gets chilly!) We would all highly recommend Craft Cottage (and Beer) for a lovely family holiday. Thank you.

About the location

BEER

Seaton 1.5 miles; Lyme Regis 9 miles; Sidmouth 9.5 miles; Exeter 25 miles.

Beer is a small picturesque fishing village on the south Devon coast near Seaton. The shingle beach is very sheltered, backed by limestone cliffs and was once fertile smuggling territory, plus contraband was hidden in nearby caves, which are now a popular tourist attraction. Beer is situated on the stretch of Devon coastline, known as the Jurassic Coast, a designated World Heritage Site, and the village offers sloping streets lined with picturesque stone houses and cottages built on many different levels of the steep valley sides. There are a good range of shops, friendly cafes, restaurants and pubs in Beer, plus just outside the village is the popular Pecorama Gardens, which are perched on the hill overlooking Lyme Bay. Pecorama boasts the Beer Heights Light Railway and indoor model railway exhibition, along with a childrens' play area. Beer is a unique Devon fishing village and a great place to stay.
