  • "Lovely stay, owner friendly, very helpful and dealt with minor boiler issue very promptly, offering to come the same evening late on."

I liked that he was approachable and easily accessible but respected our holiday space and time. In regard to a point raised in a previous review about it just being a business - these cottages are the owner’s business, and he isn’t in it for the joy of dealing with difficult customers or making new friends! Mike repeatedly asked if everything was ok and if there was anything at all he could help with, as well as recommending things to do, and it was more than we could have asked for. Cottage not immaculate, but clean and modern with plenty of amenities, and given this is a regularly booked out holiday cottage there is always going to be a bit of wear and tear, in answer to earlier points raised in reviews. It was clean, easy to maintain with 2 dogs, and because it was cosy we weren’t too obsessed about keeping it spotless so had a lovely relaxed stay. It is quite small but that was clearly mentioned in the property details, and it worked fine for the 3 of us plus 2 dogs. A stair gate might be useful in future to keep dogs downstairs as it’s quite hard to stop clingy disobedient dogs following you upstairs, maybe that is just ours! We used a chair as best we could, as we are reasonably resourceful. We were welcomed with a bottle of chilled wine, coffee and tea, milk and muffins (thank you for this!), and bin bags, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, hand wash, a couple of rolls of toilet paper, along with other bits and pieces and condiments were provided. There is decent rechargeable mini Dyson which we could use most days quickly to keep on top of dog hairs/garden leaves, which just about kept enough charge to do the house top to bottom. As there is regularly cut grass from the frontage and village green, along with some gorgeous climbing roses around the door, a brush is provided (in and outside). Take dog towels and a Muddy Dog if you have one! Upstairs there is an ironing board/iron, decent hairdryer, decent pressure shower, plenty of storage (more hangers would be appreciated

  • "Great little cottage in fantastic village."

Unfortunately, the cottage is in need of a deep clean and tlc. Garden overgrown, kitchen grubby with chipped glasses and crockery. Lounge stank of cigarette smoke and was very dirty. Upstairs faired a lot better with comfortable beds and adequate bathroom. Bedroom 1, however, did have a mound of bird faeces on outside window sill so couldn't be opened. Owners communication was good but felt this property and sunny cottage next door was just a business. Shame as it could be stunning.

We wished to attend our guests immediately upon arrival to address their issues of smells and chipped glassware - no issues of cleaning were raised at all. They did not want us to call in because as I found they were leaving their third large dog in the cottage on the sofa while they took the other 2 out. Much cheaper than boarding kennels - and then complain about the smell ! . Cottage is strictly non smoking, cleaned properly and there are no chipped glasses or crockery. Guests enjoy our rambling roses, regularly cut grass and nesting swallows - windows can all be opened and are cleaned regularly. We have a 2 small dog limit out of consideration for our non doggy guests. Property Owner

Surrounded by countryside with walks from the front door if you wish but also only a short drive to great walks in the Dales as well as nearby Barnard Castle and Raby. The cottage is very comfortable - great having 2 sofas, the kitchen has everything you need as we mainly cook in and a decent size fridge freezer. A bonus to find TV with Netflix and Amazon! Lovely to sit outside in the garden in the morning with a coffee and watch the world go by on the green or read a book. Durham was, of course, wonderful but the village of Staindrop was a revelation. Much more charming than we expected. We loved living there for a week. Corner Cottage has the old world character you might expect from a 17th Century house, but with up to date necessities. The decoration is the right balance of homely and tasteful. The sofas are very comfortable, and a lovely place to sit and enjoy the woodburning stove. The kitchen has a good sized fridge and the equipment a holiday chef might need. The main bedroom was cosy, with ample storage and the king-sized bed very comfortable. We didn’t notice the road at all. There are a variety of walks from the door and Staindrop is well placed for touring the area. The pleasant market town of Castle Barnard is a short drive away and the lovely, larger town of Richmond a bit further. Lots of other things to do and see, or you can just enjoy the wonderful countryside.

  • "On a positive note - the cottage was clean and comfortable and it was good to have eggs, milk, tea and biscuits left for us."

Thanks! One thing, though, that we hadn't realised was how close the cottage is to the very busy main road through the village. We found the traffic noise woke us up every morning, which was a shame. I think this fact should be included in the information because we wouldn't have chosen it had we known how noisy the road is. Also - there was a problem with the shower while we were there - which was fixed - but for three days we had to have a bucket catching water by the front door (the seal around the bath had come away and water was just coming through the ceiling). This wasn't great while we were trying to relax on holiday! The other thing is that the cottage says that dogs are welcome - but then when we got there the info in the cottage said that dogs were not allowed upstairs. My partner's dog is a guide dog, and is accustomed to sleeping in the bedroom. I think if there is a restriction on where the dog is allowed to go within the property - that information should be included in the description on the website (apologies if it is there - I didn't see it).

Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry you were disturbed by the road noise, this hasn't been a complaint previously. The cottage does have double glazing and faces away from the road. If we had been aware that the dog you had was an assistance dog we would have endeavoured to help, the rules regarding dogs are part of the booking terms and are there as a courtesy to all guests. We hope you enjoyed your stay. Property Owner

The cottage itself is compact, but has two double bedrooms so will comfortably sleep 4. The open plan kitchen is small but very well designed and equipped with everything you could ask for. The bathroom is also quite small, but well planned and the roof window makes it really light and airy. The shower over the bath is awesome. The main bedroom has a tv and DAB radio, and there is a tv and another DAB radio CD player in the living area. The two of us found it a great place to stay, and very comfortable. The views out across the green were also really nice, giving it a great village feel. To be fair though, we didn't go to the Dales to sit indoors, and this cottage is perfectly placed to enjoy the area. There are nice walks around the village and Raby Castle is very nearby. Barnard Castle is also close, as is Bishop Auckland (and both of those have numerous places to eat or get take-aways). The Dales themselves are obviously also very close by, (amongst other things we walked from Keld to Muker and back which was superb, visited High and Low force waterfalls and took a trip to the Tan Hill Inn, England's highest pub, which was also very enjoyable with some great views). The Durham Coast (we went to Seaham) to the East and the Lake District to the West are also very easy to get to for a day trip. The cottage has plenty of information and leaflets for the local attractions, as well as a very useful OS map. We would return to Corner Cottage without a second thought, (to be fair we would both like to live there permanently!) and the whole booking process through Sykes was as easy as it could possibly be. If you like the sound of the cottage from the advertisement but are just not quite sure, then in our opinion you should just go for it.

It was a really nice touch to find lots of farm eggs in the kitchen. The cottage is lovely and cosy, with a very comfortable king-size bed. We didn't need the wood burning stove, but can imagine the lounge area would have been very cosy with that lit. I really liked the way that there were climbing roses surrounding the front door, with small fairy lights which came on at night, and a small seating area in the front garden which overlooks the green. It is a very convenient spot from which to explore various places in Co. Durham and N. Yorkshire - and great to have the very good café at Raby Castle virtually on our doorstep. The owner was very helpful - and although we only needed to check out a couple of things he was very quick to respond. The information file was also extremely helpful - especially the recommendations about local eating places: we went to two of those and both were really good. There were only 2 of us and we found that really comfortable, but thought it might have felt a little over-crowded with 4 adults, although it may be that we just like to spread out, as others had clearly managed very well!

We were very pleased with the situation of Corner Cottage because it enabled easy access to all parts of County Durham. We liked the history of the cottage and it was warm and welcoming. We were lucky with the April weather and sat outside a few times when we returned from our travels. We enjoyed visiting many places including the coast and NT properties, and the attractive town of Barnard Castle had everything within about 5 miles. Our favourite visit was to Raby Castle, only a mile from Staindrop, with wonderful views and interesting rooms..

Parking was no problem. Communication with the owner was exemplary, as were the instructions how to find the Cottage & key exchange. We appreciated the fresh eggs and cookies! Staindrop was a great choice of location - we had some lovely hikes around the village and also along the river in Barnard Castle, from Bowlees to Low Force & High Force, and visited Durham Cathedral.

The lounge area is cosy with two settees. Games, TV and Radio. This cottage is central to all sorts of attractions, garden centres and waterfalls. About the location

STAINDROP

Barnard Castle 5 miles; Durham 20 miles.

The pretty Teesdale village of Staindrop has always been closely associated with the fortunes of nearby Raby Castle and its owners. The Castle (open to the public) is one of the most grand in England. Enlarged and beautified over the centuries, the medieval heart remains and a walled garden and 200 acre deer park add to the splendour. Staindrop has many interesting shops, pubs and cafes set round its long village green. The popular market town of Barnard Castle is 5 miles away, with its castle, the Bowes Museum, plus of course its wide range of shops and tea rooms. Walkers will enjoy the many walks around Teesdale.
