There was a problem with the heating but communication with the owner was excellent and the matter was resolved to our satisfaction.

Thank you for positive feedback. I'm pleased that the heating issue was resolved and my apologies that the matter occurred. Delighted that it did not adversely affect your overall impression and enjoyment of your stay. Property Owner

  • "Holiday home, Ivy Cottage, is perfectly placed for trips to surrounding hot spots as well as Helmsley itself."

Facilities at Ivy cottage are generally ok. Bedrooms offer a good level of comfort and the new armchair was a welcome upgrade. Other areas could however do with some refurbishment, maintenance and/or upgrade. Overall though a pleasant enough stay

  • "Nice kitchen and back garden."

The bench out the front is a nice place to sit on a sunny morning but it's in desperate need of a sand down and a repaint. I found the loungeroom to be uncomfortable and unwelcoming with its black/brown vinyl seating and red/purple and cream decor - and the unflued wood heater. The dining room is dominated by the table, so again nowhere comfortable to sit down. Bedrooms were good, enough space for us all and the beds were comfortable. Hot water was readily available and the heating was easy to use. You should probably give people a "heads up" as to maintenance people entering the property unannounced as we had both the lawn mower and the window cleaner enter the back garden without attempting to contact us first by knocking on the door. It didn't really bother me.

Thank you for your feedback, and I am pleased that a number of the aspects of Ivy Cottage met with your approval. I am sorry that you found the living room uncomfortable( 3 piece suite is actually leather) and the décor not to your taste. Obviously we can't cater for every taste, but I can say we have never been criticised before on the grounds of comfort or decorative style. Indeed we have been consistently praised by clients and by Visit England for the comfort and decorative quality of the cottage. But nevertheless I am sorry it didn't meet with your approval. I hope maybe you found some comfortable furniture in the conservatory. I am also sorry that your wife found the unannounced presence of the gardener and the window-cleaner as intrusions to her privacy. As I explained at the time, these necessary maintenance tasks are weather- dependent and timings cannot really be predicated. However, you have a valid point that they could announce their arrival when someone is in occupation, and I have taken that on board. I hope your obvious irritations did not detract unduly from your and your wife's enjoyment of your holiday. Property Owner

A stones throw away from the village centre but also tucked away from any noise and traffic. We had a lovely stay and would highly recommend. Only feedback being we were given a stairgate (great that these were supplied) but they didn’t actually fit into the spaces at the bottom and top of the stairs.

Thank you for your feedback. I'm sorry that the stairgate apparently wasn't fully functioning and I'm pleased it didn't adversely affect your stay. I will have look at the stairgates to see if they need altering or replacing Property Owner

  • "The cottage was extremely well equipped and could not be better placed to enjoy the facilities of Helmsley and the surrounding delights of Yorkshire."

The generous welcome pack consisted of a bottle of wine, a bag of Maltesers and a packet of biscuits. On the downside however the cleanliness of the cooker, cutlery and utensils could have been better and the garden could do with some attention. The Wi-fi password failed to allow connection to the internet and coverage generally in the area is very poor. Parking close to the property is also a problem as the neighbours are very territorial about what they consider to be their right to commandeer the highway..

Thank you for your feedback. I have sought clarification from and apologised to the client for the problems he encountered, which are most unusual. WiFi is fully functional now and I can only assume there was a temporary outage/poor signal which I would have sought to rectify with the provider(BT) if I had been aware of it. I am sorry that there was an incident with a neighbour over parking. We have never had this problem before. We will advise clients that parking on the adjacent road where there is no house frontage is preferred. I can only assume that the cleanliness issue was a one-off, as we normally score highly (as other feedback and inspection reports evidence) on this aspect. The issue has now been attended to and will be given attention in future. I accept that there were some weeds growing on the front path during a particularly vigorous growing season, and apologise for this. This has been attended to. We hope you had a lovely stay otherwise. Property Owner

  • "The cottage has a lovely homely feel with lots of space and amenities."

The shower/bath was great, as was the kitchen. The double bed was not comfortable and dips on the side nearest the window. This made it very hard for me and my husband to sleep together as one of us would feel like we were rolling out of the bed. I think it needs a new mattress. The kitchen was well supplied (could benefit with more water drinking glasses) and we appreciated the welcome gifts provided. The house temperature could get above 18 degrees despite the setting being 22 degrees and on some days it felt it hadn’t come on for very long at all.

Lots of space, warm, comfortable beds. Clean and with plenty of equipment. Couldn’t figure out the heating system on arrival and Sara who looks after Ivy Cottage was with us in minutes. Nothing too much trouble. My only negative is the bath over the shower which worked very well but I am only 4’9” with an arthritic hip and it will encourage me to study the details a bit better when choosing. However there is plenty of space downstairs to install a shower. Also another bannister where the dado rail is makes an enormous difference when going upstairs. This should not distract though and without those disabilities this is a really nice cottage to stay in. I would recommend it with confidence.

About the location

HELMSLEY

Kirkbymoorside 6 miles; Thirsk 14 miles; Pickering 13 miles; York 26 miles.

Lying in a sheltered corner of Upper Ryedale, on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park, Helmsley is a prestigious market town with a spacious market square surrounded by houses, hotels and shops. The area is important historically - Helmsley has its own 12th century castle and English Heritage’s Rievaulx Abbey and Castle Howard are close by. Helmsley also boasts an arts centre showing films and plays, and an outdoor swimming pool, which is open during the summer. There is excellent walking on the doorstep - indeed the Cleveland Way starts in Helmsley - and the surrounding North York Moors with their hidden dales and villages are pretty in all seasons. York is less than an hour's drive south, as is Scarborough, Whitby and the east coast, whilst Pickering and the beginning of the famous steam railway line (North Yorkshire Moors Railway) are a little over 20 minutes' drive.
