  • "We had a nice stay at Dere Cottage, although the place was not ready for us on arrival, this was all sorted with the owner and this did not ruin our little break away."

The cottage was lovely and well furnished. It was very comfortable and had everything we needed. I do agree with other reviews that the cleanliness could have been a lot better but we cleaned around a bit ourselves anyway. We didn’t find anything that bad to make us leave the place. We did avoid the garden as there was a lot of dog muck, this really should be checked before people arrive. Again, didn’t bother us too much as we were out and about for most of the day. The cottage is on a busy road but the traffic was not an issue for us. I would maybe suggest a gate being put on the entrance as dogs could potentially run out into the road. Wonderful location for visiting nearby places. Would highly recommend Richmond, Ripley and Northallerton. Lovely, quaint places. These were recommended to us by the owner of the cottage, who, was a genuinely nice bloke. This cottage really does have so much potential. Decent cleaners are needed and a few issues to be rectified.

Thank you so much for your feedback, we really appreciate it and glad overall you had a good stay. The property is now under a brand new Cleaning and Management company who are as wonderfully energetic and thorough as we could wish for. Moving forward we will take all this on board. Thank you again. Property Owner

  • "We thought that the cottage was lovely and well furnished however the level of cleanliness was poor."

The cleaning company that is used in my opinion is not good. When we arrived l checked the garden for possible escape routs for my dogs and had to pick up about 10 dog poos left in the garden. We also discovered that the previous occupants had also put dog poo unbaged in the bin which was not taken out. Food was left in the microwave. A half drunk bottle of wine was shoved behind the sofa. Dog hairs were in the bath. The floor and skirting was dirty throughout. The kitchen pots had to be washed before we could use them. Door handles felt grubby, the list goes on. For the money we paid for the 4 nights we expected better. Such a shame.

  • "Dere Cottage could have been great."

.... But it wasn't. We left after two hours. The Owner promised he did his best but clearly doesn't ( I have seen a review from after our visit with the same complaints - Sheena Aug) On arrival we set up shop as usual, but things were clearly not right. The place was dirty, with dust and dirt everywhere. There was a dead fly on one of the the dining plates, the glasses and crockery in the cupboards were filthy and the interiors of all windows has cob webs. I tried to get on with it and sat outside with a beer, but was unable due to the racket from the traffic thundering past less than six feet away and also put off by the copious amount of dog mess in the overgrown grass. The grass area has clearly been used as an unattended paddock for dogs as the french window was covered in scratches and needs replacing. The final nail was finding an infestation of maggots in the bath. Not just one or two, they were dropping out of a light fitting at a rate of about 15 per half an hour . Guessing there was a dead "something" in the roof space. Apologies to Sheena (Aug review), I shouldn't have left it this long to review. The owner was very upset and promised to sort his poor cleaning service and get his pest controller in but he clearly didn't do a good job. I suggest that he accepts that he is no good at managing, comes out of the cottage business and turns Dere Cottage back into a cow shed !!!!! ( assume the cows can put up with the noise) July 23 - Holiday ruined by Dere Cottage

Thank you for your feedback, the property is now under a new cleaning company with complete management of the cottage. It has been comprehensively cleaned and decorated. We will take your feedback forward. Thanks again. Property Owner

About the location

BROMPTON-ON-SWALE

Richmond 3 miles; Leyburn 12 miles; Reeth 14 miles; Barnard Castle 18 miles.

The village of Brompton-on-Swale is situated to the east of Richmond on the northern banks of the River Swale. Named in the Domesday Book the village name is believed to have been derived from “broom” (the Shrub) and “tun” an old English word meaning farmstead or village. Today the village is home to a traditional pub and village shop. There are pleasant walks to be enjoyed around the village and along the riverside. The nearby ancient market town of Richmond is three miles away with its cobbled streets and narrow alleys or 'wynds' which enshrine over nine centuries of busy history and unique character. The town grew up around its castle, a Norman fortress dating back to 1071. Today Richmond offers wonderful walks to be enjoyed such as the Castle Walk - a dramatic terrace walk beneath the castle walls - or alternatively walk alongside the River Swale where there are parks, safe paddling areas and small waterfalls to enjoy. Brompton-on-Swale is located between the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Yorkshire Moors National Park providing an ideal location for exploring this scenic area.
