  • "We booked a week at Petty Knowes over the new year period and really enjoyed our relaxing stay."

The cottage adjoins the owner's residence and it quite easy to find with being just off the main road that runs to the Scottish border (which is about 9 miles further on). The cottage was lovely and had absolutely everything we needed for our stay. There are so many places to visit in the surrounding areas. Rochester is only an hour away by car to Newcastle or Gateshead Metro Centre, and an hour and a half to Edinburgh! If you want to stay more local , Otterburn nearby has some nice places to eat and a well stocked convenience store for bits and bobs. Our tip: Bring suitable footwear and leave the manolos at home. Staying over winter meant the ground was muddy when opening and closing the gate to leave or come back to the property. We expected this and brought our boots but better not to be caught out. Thank you Joanne and Gordon for a lovely stay.

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Petty Knowes."

The cottage was well appointed, welcoming and had all that was needed to make our stay comfortable and pleasant. The welcome basket was a nice touch and appreciated, as was the beautiful Christmas tree and decorations. The cottage location is ideal for watching the night sky and we were able to observe the spectacle of the Geminids meteor shower during our stay. Thank you Joanne and Gordon, we had a great week.

  • "Lovely cottage in a secluded part of Northumberland."

Made cosy with an open fire in the living room and the option for a log burner fire in the bedroom. Very well equipped and lovely added extras such as the Gin Snug, blankets and candles to make your stay a home away from home. The bed is so comfy too - never been away with a bed that’s as comfy as our own!! Perfect getaway with hosts that live adjoining who are helpful friendly and there if you need them but give you the total privacy to enjoy your stay. The hot tub is perfect after a day’s walking and to see the stars later at night - suggest that all visitors take slip on shoes and a torch to get to it as it is round the corner from the cottage and via a gravel drive. Highly recommend this cottage if you want total relaxation and seclusion. Walks on your doorstep and so many places of beauty to visit & walk a short drive away. A fabulous cafe in the village is an added bonus.

  • "The cottage was well presented, clean and tidy and was in an ideal location for exploring the area."

It has lovely views over the surrounding countryside and offers a peaceful and quiet getaway. I'm sure that in the warmer months it offers a fantastic stay but we found it difficult to keep warm in November despite having all the electric heaters on and the fire going in the living room. The kitchen, with no heating, was particularly cold and the bathroom underfloor heating never seemed to provide any noticeable benefit. Unfortunately this tarnished what was an otherwise enjoyable stay in a lovely cottage.

  • "Lovely decor and attention to detail but the standard was let down by the need for the bathroom tiling/mastic requiring a good scrub to remove the black mould."

Ditto at kitchen sink. It’s a shame with all the nice tiles/fittings that it’s not been maintained. The heater in the bedroom was broken with small convector heater provided as replacement. From the photos I was expecting a lovely view, but once inside the cottage, there is no view and it felt a little dark and enclosed. Guests need to be made aware that the cottage is in the middle of a field, accessed via a rough 400m track, via a broken gate which is quite hard to open. Parking is off road but very tight (drive in, reverse out). Dogs are welcome and the cottage is dog friendly, but the garden is not dog secure (with sheep and cats this is a challenge and again, should be made clear in the advertisement). Whilst we had lovely weather, door straight in to carpeted lounge would be a challenge with two wet muddy dogs/humans. Positives were the super comfy bed, nice bed linen and good comms from the owner on access. We regularly stay at cottages all over the country and felt this one was a little overpriced in comparison.

Good place to do some star gazing and we were lucky enough to catch some of the perseids meteor shower. Hot tub is very nice and easy to use, it is on the owners side but that's not a problem as when you're using it the hosts away so you have good privacy. The hosts are lovely and friendly and available when needed.

  • "We booked the cottage mainly for the hot tub, but it was in the owner’s garden, just outside their windows, away from our cottage which meant to use it we would have to leave our dogs unattended a a no had no privacy."

We also had to give at least 4 hours notice to use it and were asked if we could think about the environment and the cost of running it, so persuading us not to (I’m sure some of the £750 I paid would have covered that!). It was on the first page of the welcome book!! The bathroom door didn’t shut, there was a dribble of soap left in a dispenser which was not welcoming. The hoover and airer were left in the bedroom and the lights were so dim in the bedroom that you couldn’t read. It also took us ages to find the property as the name was engraved in stone which was hard to read. Lastly we couldn’t walk the dogs straight from the property as we would be walking through a field of sheep, which wasn’t advertised. When we arrived the garden was overgrown but they decided to mow it Sunday morning!!! Not very relaxing, as our dogs couldn’t go outside and there was no warning!! The owners were very friendly and sent many texts, but we will definitely not be going back. I feel I have been ripped of as 3 nights cost around £750, which I paid as I thought I’d be relaxing in a hot tub looking out towards the beautiful hills. It was worth half that amount. I feel I should be given money back as we couldn’t use the hot tub or close the bathroom door.

  • "Lovely cottage thanks for a great holiday!"

However we didn’t realise on booking that the cottage is locating on border of military camp/training area so unable to do any local walks from the cottage as the red flags were up. The local pub is also inaccessible to walk to as on an a main road with no pavement to access via foot. Just feedback to owners regarding cleaning - unfortunately there was a dog smell in the lounge for a few days whilst aired the property. We don’t have dogs so this was a bit unpleasant. The hot tub is located on owners side of property also to make you aware.

The weather was poor and I think it would be helpful to emphasise that the property can be difficult to access in icy weather. We could not get our car up the hill track to the cottage and had to park 400 metres away. Also they have a lovely "gin snug" within the cottage but there are no gin glasses or means to produce ice in the cottage. That would be an improvement. However overall we enjoyed or stay. Be welcomed into a sitting room which has been lovingly decorated with a feature colourful wall and has plenty of seating for curling up with your loved one and unwinding in front of the 42" TV.

Walk through to the open-plan kitchen/diner which has all the necessary appliances for rustling up some delicious meals and benefits from a washer/dryer so you don't have to bring your whole wardrobe with you during your trip.

Gin lovers will delight in visiting this property's snug room which the owners have renovated into 'The Gin Room' and is the most characterful part of the cottage with its stone walls and sheepskin day bed.

Once the evening draws to a close, retire to the king-size bedroom which has its own multi fuel stove for those colder evenings, as well as a TV so you don't have to move to watch your favourite morning shows whilst relaxing in the soft Egyptian cotton bedding.
