  • "Quite an old house in a valley with lovely views across fields, cows mewing in the nearby farm, and a gurgling river a few yards from the front door."

    A little muddy in late October, bring your wellies ! driveway did flood during a massive down pour. A little chilly inside on arrival but electric radiators in all rooms made it very cosy and the smell of damp disappeared quite quickly. Found lots of logs in privy in the garden and the log burner in the lounge worked a little too well and we had to turn radiators down ! Lounge was v comfortable and beds good too. Kitchen had most things we needed. Farm shops provided great local produce ! induction hob which we've never used before. A lovely stay thanks to the owners for a peaceful few days in East Devon.

  • "The property is picture perfect from the outside inside is a different matter."

    The floors needed a good mopping. There were cobwebs between items of furniture and the walls and spiders everywhere. We could live with this. The maintenance on the house is very poor. There are peeling damp patches around the house and general maintenance as poor. The tiling around the bath could have been done better by a three year old. The lighting was very poor with the only decent light in the kitchen. The kitchen was very poorly equipped. However the biggest issue was not mentioned in the Sykes blurb. It mentioned that the ceilings were low. They were fine at about 6 ft 5 inches high or taller. The one light in the lounge could be an issue for a very tall person but at 5 ft 10 I was fine. What is not mentioned in the blurb is that the door heights varied across the house. In order to prevent any head injuries you need to be a maximum of 5 ft 4 inches tall. My 85 year old father left after our stay with 3 bleeding head wounds from banging his head on the door lintels. There is obviously knowledge of this issue and the solution was to staple 3 small cushions to 3 of the doors, however the cushion was staples on to one side so your could reasonably safely enter that space but if you were to leave there was no protection attached to the door and injuries occurred. Overall the accommodation would really not be recommended. This is a pity as usually good from Sykes. It does not deserve any more than 2 stars at most. Fortunately it is in Devon and we could spend the days elsewhere in the county. The return to the house was not a time of joy. My recommendation is to avoid this property at all cost. It would really not be suitable for 6 people. I could offer mor observation’s but will leave it as DON’T STAY HERE!

  • "Beautiful outside, lovely location."

    Inside is dark with poor lighting making reading difficult. It smells damp and there are signs of dampness prevalent which can be expected as rain pours down over the bathroom window from a blocked gutter, and a downpipe at the rear is not connected to a drain. We also think the damp has made the bedroom cabinet drawers difficult to slide. Sloping floors in bedrooms and challenging stairs are not good when sleepy and needing the loo which is downstairs. Sleeps 6 but only parking for 1 car and no alternative ?

    We listen to comments and take them seriously. We will try to improve the lighting were possible but it is an old cottage with small windows. Regards the guttering, this is in hand, we are waiting for a gap in bookings and a date convenient to climax windows for this work to be carried out. Can’t do anything about sloping floors, quirks of old cottages! There should be enough room for parking for three/four cars if tidily parked otherwise there is an area by the field gate for more parking. Property Owner

  • "The house was fine…."

    .a couple of comments…..it says it’s dog friendly but the garden is seperate from the house so you can’t just open the door and let the dogs out…..you need a torch at night for the wee break before bed….this should be made clear to people……it says sleeps 6…. Which it does as there are 3 bedrooms……but there’s not enough room or seating ground floor……best suitable for 4 …..the location is great and very pretty and peaceful……I don’t usually comment on line or like to criticise but this house is best suited to 4 people with no dogs

The property

Riverbank is a delightful cottage overlooking the River Cory and beautiful Devonshire countryside beyond.

Retaining many characterful features of a property of this age, Riverbank has been updated to provide a relaxing, well-equipped holiday cottage in the most tranquil of locations.

Step up into the inviting sitting room, which has a feature fireplace with woodburning stove and enjoys views to the front of the cottage over the garden and river beyond.

A spacious dining room provides a great spot to share mealtimes together with a newly-fitted and well equipped galley kitchen at the rear of the property.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms, a double and two twin rooms all with views over the adjoining fields.

A spacious bathroom is located on the ground floor and has a bath with a shower over.

The cottage is approached via a private gravelled driveway with parking for one car next to the cottage.

Across the drive, the garden is enclosed by a stone wall and gate.

A picnic bench provides the ideal spot to sit whilst overlooking the river with a glass of a chilled beverage or perhaps some dining alfresco.

Care will need to be taken with pets and children due to the proximity with the river and livestock in the adjoining fields.

Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, between two ridges of the Blackdown Hills, the area has an abundance of rural charm with local walks and attractions waiting to be explored. Dalwood has its own vineyard, renowned for its award-winning sparkling and white wines, and open to the public for tours and tasting. Dalwood is a small rural village resting in East Devon, among the idyllic Blackdown Hills AONB. Its facilities include a traditional pub serving food as well as a general store. Close by are some of Devon's most popular attractions. The market town of Axminster, lined with fine buildings, offers much to the visitor including an excellent range of amenities and a fascinating museum. To the western side of the Blackdown Hills you will find another market town, Honiton also holds much charm along with a museum and an art gallery. After your dose of undulating countryside, walking and cycling, you may wish to head to the coast, nearby there is a choice of wonderful seaside spots including Seaton, Lyme Regis and Sidmouth. All come which their own individual character and promise a fun-packed day trip to the beach with their activities and opportunities on offer.
