  • "Lovely clean and well equipped cottage."

Probably the best of many cottages we have stayed in over many years. This cottage is well situated for both walking and sites of interest, alongside many small towns and villages of interest without having to travel too far. Would highly recommend staying here.

Beautifully appointed, scrupulously clean with friendly owner. I left my mobile phone behind and Mrs Simpson sent a message on the day I left ,offering to post it up to me. Would highly recommend and would certainly return.

  • "We had a great holiday and the cottage is truly lovely."

However, for anyone considering booking, please note that it is not in Northumberland, but County Durham. Places like Alnwick are about a 2-hour drive away, not on your doorstep. I have twice informed Sykes of this, thinking they'd care that their listing was inaccurate, but both times, a representative has just said it is correct elsewhere in the listing (hidden away). Really strange attitude to have been informed of an inaccuracy, and refuse to update it. Perhaps it's because Northumberland is more of a tourist magnet than County Durham?

Nice and peaceful. Found it to be a good location to visit Barnard Castle, North Pennines and Durham. We had young baby, so washing machine and tumble dryer in the outbuilding was super useful, as was the use of the cot and high chair. Had an issue where we lost the key and the owner was very helpful and quick to resolve. Thank you for a nice break!

The log burner in the winter months is lovely! Me and my partner went for her birthday and just wanted to relax, and this is certainly a great space to do exactly that! The only issue i had, which I believe is a Sykes problem, not the owners, it list this property ad being in Northumberland, which it is not. A bit misleading, but maybe I should've double checked before booking. I would expect a place to be where it states it is, however.

We had to request the DVD player, which had a short HDMI cable & had to be mounted on a pile of books to reach the wall-mounted TV.Also, we were advised by Lisa Simpson that there was no CD/radio provided, which was contrary to your description as part of the package. Poor lighting over the dining area. No information pack was provided regarding the equipment in the property (kitchen information was found in spare cupboard, not obvious) and there was limited tourist leaflets to be found & these were located in the Utility Room across the yard.

There was a lot of attention to detail. (The only thing I wanted was a wooden spoon!) My friend who was in the smaller bedroom said it would have been nice to have a simple pull out bracket to hang a few items, but we did appreciate the coat stand in the lounge. The beds were the most comfortable I have ever had on holiday. Delightful spot, absolutely LOVELY and would thoroughly recommend. We had never been to the area before and found some really lovely places to visit - some by car, some by bus. Would definitely go back.

Set between the pretty market towns of Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle is the sleepy little village of Butterknowle, near to Hamsterley Forest. The town centre hosts an arts complex should you be in search of a bit of culture, whilst there’s a range of independent shops to peruse, where you’re certain to find the perfect holiday keepsake.
