A LITTLE HISTORY… Baixa is an elegant neighborhood, built after the earthquake of 1755. It owes its name (Pombalina) to Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, first marquess of Pombal, Prime Minister of Joseph I of Portugal from 1750 to 1777 and eminent figure Portuguese Enlightenment, which led the reconstruction of Lisbon after the earthquake of 1755. We often walk there when we are already in the center. By metro, the nearest station is "Baixa-Chiado", you can then decide to head first to Baixa (east), or to Chiado and Bairro Alto (west).
