This region is also teeming with local history, a real treat for any guest who is looking to expand their knowledge of European history. Placa de l'Almonia is just a short walk away from the town centre and is home to a very special house. This house was run by a group of university students who provided essential wheat and money to some of Pollensa's peasants. In addition, this square was used as a battleground on 30h May 1550 when the citizens were forced to defend themselves against a group of violent ambushers. Thus, the modern-day citizens hold a ceremony every August to honour the bravery of those who lost their lives during this conflict. If you are looking for a free attraction to visit, the Pollensa Museum is also just a stone's throw away from the town centre. This museum originally hosted a varied collection of Gothic altarpieces, some of which are still on show today. Despite its 16th-century roots, the museum was not officially founded until 1975. During this time, the Pollensa Museum received a lot of praise for its archaic collection, especially during the Summer Exhibition of Painting. Guests can browse through these collections, exploring the Buddhist artefacts as well as the works of Atilio Boveri. The Pollensa Museum is open Monday-Friday from 10 am till 2 pm and is free to enter. Puig de Maria is a deeply significant landmark within Pollensa and is just over 5-minutes away from the centre of the region. At the top of a 330-metre summit sits a 14th-century monastery that acts as a beautiful shrine to the Virgin Mary. This monastery also underwent an intense renovation during the 19th century in order to adhere to the contemporary Gothic revival. In the 21st century, guests can observe the collection of authentic and well-preserved artefacts, offering a unique look into Pollensa's religious history. Puig de Maria only takes around 30-minutes to climb, making it a fairly easy hike for most guests.
