Record breaking buildings and structures from around the world

To celebrate Guinness World Record Day, we look at the world's biggest, tallest and some quite unbelieveable buildings and places.

When it comes to record breaking, what immediately springs to mind are the "largest", "fastest", "oldest" so on and so forth. To coincide with Guinness World Record Day, we look at some of the record breakers in the worlds of tourism and architecture.

World's Tallest Building – Burj Khalifa, Dubai
The Burj Khalifa is not only the tallest building in Dubai but also in the world. At over 828 metres high and more than 160 floors this super skyscraper has by far taken the number one spot and is yet to be beaten. With being the world's tallest building the Burj Khalifa has also conquered a few more world records including highest outdoor observation deck, tallest service elevator and highest occupied floor anywhere on the planet.

World's Largest Building – Boeing Everett Factory, near Seattle, USA
Recognised as the largest building in the world by volume (472 million cubic feet), the Boeing Everett Factory located near Seattle is an aeroplane assembly factory in the US. The factory is primarily used to put together wide-bodied planes such as the Boeing 747s, 767s, 777s, and the new 787 Dreamliner. The Everett factory is also a place where visitors can look out from the observation platform to see what's going on.

World's Largest Airport Terminal – Terminal 3 Building at Dubai International Airport
Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport is the largest terminal building in the world. With over 1,713,000 m2 (18,440,000 sq ft) of space as well as partly being built underground this huge construction cost a whopping $4.5 billion. As yet another of Dubai's “mega structures” the terminal building includes first and business class lounges, restaurants, 180 check-in counters and 2,600 car-parking spaces.

World's Largest Museum – Louvre, Paris
The Louvre Museum in Paris, France in the world's largest museum, home to the most impressive art collections in history spanning a total area of 652,300 square feet. The Louvre was originally built as a fortress in 1190 but was restored in the 16th century into Royal residences. Located on the banks of the Seine River, the Louvre is one of the city's biggest and most popular tourist attractions.

World's Largest Hotel - Izmailovo Hotel, Moscow (not the prettiest but definitely monstrous in size with 7500 rooms)
This ginormous complex in Moscow (some might say not the most attractive) was built for the summer Olympics in 1980, due to the host city's lack of any decent hotel rooms and suites during the 1970s. The Izmailovo Hotel houses 7,500 rooms making it the world's largest hotel by number of units. This hotel could quite easily without any problems accommodate every single taxi driver in the area of New York.

World's Largest Swimming Pool - San Alfonso del Mar resort, Chile
Now this is one unusual record breaker, the world's largest swimming pool at San Alfonso del Mar resort, Chile can hold 66 million gallons of water, covers an area of 20 acres and cost £2million to construct. The pool is so big you can even sail a boat on it. This huge water masterpiece is the equivalent size of 20 Olympic size swimming pools and is even heated.

World's Largest Restaurant - Bawabet Dimashq Restaurant – Damascus, Syria
The world's largest restaurant, Bawabet Dimashq is a family run empire in Damascus, Syria. Opened in 2002 the 54,000 sq metre dining area and 2,500 sq metre kitchen, can serve up to 6014 people. Costing approximately $40million to build, the owner Shaker al Samman also employs a total of 1800 staff. The décor and design of the restaurant features waterfalls, fountains and replicas of Syrian ruins as well as a broad menu including Indian, Chinese, Arab, Iranian, Middle Eastern and Syrian dishes

World's Largest Cruise Ship – Oasis of The Sea by Royal Caribbean
The Royal Caribbean's crown jewel - Oasis of the Sea is the largest cruise ship in the world to date. Weighing a massive 220,000 tonnes and comfortably accommodating 5,400 guests it is no wonder why she is the mother of all cruise liners. A city of her own the Oasis of the Sea includes 16 decks, 5 swimming pools, 22 restaurants and 2165 members of staff. The ship is also jam packed with everything from rock climbing walls, ice rinks and a floating bar.

Last but not least (or maybe it is) we look at something on the opposite end of the spectrum:
World's Smallest House - (at only 188 sq. feet, this definitely is one of the smallest liveable houses in the world)

At only 188-square-feet this one room house in Islington, London is considered the world smallest. Although small you might have to have larger pockets if you're thinking of making an offer, as this property is on the market for £275,000
