Also at short distance is the centre of Cascais. The catchy village started to be the humble provider of fishing and agriculture activities of the capital city, Lisbon. In 1870, King Louis II turned Cascais into his summer residence. During the II War, thanks to the Portuguese neutral position and the village’s beauty and elegance, most of the European royal families came to settle in or to simply enjoy the sun and the beaches. We can still see some of the beautiful mansions built by these nobles through Cascais, Estoril and the surroundings.
