Guide to the Canary Islands Part 3 – Fuerteventura

Welcome to the third part of our guide to summer and winter holidays in the Canary Islands

Continuing with our guide to the Canary Islands, part 3 is all about Fuerteventura. This island is the second largest of the Canary Islands after Tenerife and loosely translated Fuerteventura also means “strong winds”. Although not a bad thing, the strong sea breeze here makes the island popular for certain sports and activities; The weather here is perfect for wind surfing/surfers, kite flying (there is also an annual kit flying festival) which is a keen favourite upon the island and not to mention that breeze will come in handy when the mid-day temperatures soar.

With not only a great contrast in weather but Fuerteventura has an endless string of pristine white beaches and transparent turquoise waters. A place to getaway and truly re-charge your batteries. Fuerteventura is superb for any type of holiday whether you want to relax, have fun with the kids or just slouch on the beach all day.

Corralejo – The fantastic 7 mile long stretch of white sands, guaranteed to make you a beach lover. Also with a selection of bars, stores and eateries.

El Cotillo – A rustic little fishing village, with restaurants that offer some of the best fresh food in Fuerteventura. For those who enjoy a quieter holiday lifestyle and good food with the company of a friendly atmosphere.

Costa Calma – This sunshine haven off the coast has calm waters and an off shore wind, making this a prime stop for windsurfers.

Attracting a lot of attention to this island is the October Blues Festival which has become more and more noticed over the last coming years. The Blues Festival celebrates the music genre of the Blue right in the heart of Corralejo so if you happen to be taking a holiday around this time be sure to check it, something a little different to mention when telling people you holiday stories. The festival usually takes places towards the end of October (24th, 25th and 26th).

Many regional UK airports including Liverpool, Leeds, London Heathrow, Birmingham, etc… offer non stop routes to Fuerteventura. You will fly into El Matorral airport in Fuerteventura via a selection of budget airlines such as Expedia, Jet2, Ryanair and many more.
